It’s hard not to wonder at Alarm Drum, a high school indie rock band with a sound, style and polish well beyond its age. The group — singer/guitarist Andrew Graybill, his younger brother Ian on keyboards and electronics, bassist Seth Kelly, and drummer Josh Kean — makes moody, hormone-laden music, but in a way that riffs, borrows and pilfers from a surprising range of alt-rock sources — the darkly romantic swells of My Bloody Valentine, the giddy cool of the Jesus & the Mary Chain, the neo-New Wave charm of Phoenix.
Based on looks, you’d likely expect Alarm Drum to pump out out Fall Out Boy-style lyrics and Blink-182 covers, and those expectations strengthen Colorsick’s impact. It’s a real treat to hear these fresh-faced musicians meld and synthesize such unexpected influence into their own sound. During the opening salvo of “You and Me” and “What am I (when I’m not you?),” the group pits spindly and aggressive guitar lines against a crystalline chillwave keyboard and a disco-friendly groove, smoothly swinging from dystopic psychedelia to dance-rock euphoria.
